Why a vacation home needs leak sensors more than your main home

• Water claims are expensive. The Insurance Information Institute reports that water damage and freezing claims averaged about $15,400 per claim from 2019 to 2023, and about 1 in 60 insured homes files one each year (Triple-I).
• Time is the multiplier. The EPA says water-damaged materials should be dried within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth (EPA). In an empty house, nobody's there to start that clock.
• Vacancy can affect coverage. Many homeowners policies limit some coverage once a home has been vacant for a set period, often 30–60 consecutive days (Triple-I). Read your own policy and ask your agent.

Setup instructions and a branded pouch are included. The sensors link to the included YoLink Hub, which connects to your router, and alerts come through the free YoLink app. No monthly subscription is needed for app alerts. The kit does not include a carbon monoxide alarm or a camera.

Where to put each leak sensor

1. Water heater: on the floor right next to the tank or pan. Tanks often fail slowly and then all at once.
2. A/C air handler / furnace closet: next to the condensate pan or drain. In humid climates, clogged A/C drain lines are a classic source of ceiling and floor leaks. For an alert right in the pan, see our AC drain pan water sensor kit.
3. Kitchen sink or dishwasher: under the sink, where the supply lines and dishwasher hookup are.
4. Washer: behind or beside it, at the supply hoses. Braided-steel hoses still fail; that's what the sensor is for.

Put the temperature/humidity sensor in a central room, away from vents and windows. Put the smoke alarm on the ceiling of a central hallway or living area.

What this kit does and doesn't do

Straight talk: these sensors alert you. They don't shut off your water. That's why we recommend pairing alerts with a plan: turn the main water off before you leave if your home allows it, and have someone local (a neighbor, a property manager, or a home watch service) who can get inside fast. What if the power or Wi-Fi goes out?

The sensors run on batteries, and the leak sensors and smoke alarm still sound locally. To reach your phone, alerts need the hub powered and your internet working. A small battery backup for your router and the hub helps keep alerts flowing through short outages.
